Myopia Control & Management

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia control refers to specialized interventions designed to slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children and adolescents. Rather than simply correcting blurry vision, these methods focus on protecting long-term eye health.

When myopia is only corrected with standard glasses or contact lenses, it often continues to worsen over time, leading to progressively stronger prescriptions. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including glaucoma, retinal detachment, and cataracts.

In recent years, myopia has become increasingly common in children. More time spent on near activities, increased screen use, and reduced outdoor time have all contributed to this growing trend.

At Clairhurst Eye Care we offer evidence-based myopia control treatments and comprehensive management strategies designed to slow myopia progression and help preserve your child’s vision for the future.

Why Myopia Control Matters

Progression of myopia can lead to:

  • Increasing prescriptions
  • Higher lifetime risk of eye disease
  • Greater dependence on vision correction

Early intervention improves long-term eye health.

Who Is at Risk?

Children may be at higher risk if they:

  • Have a family history of myopia
  • Spend long hours on screens or near work
  • Spend limited time outdoors
  • Show early or rapidly changing prescriptions

Advanced Monitoring: Axial Length (AL) Scan

Available at Clairhurst Eye Care

An Axial Length Scan is a quick, non-invasive test that measures eye growth. Since myopia progression is driven by eye elongation, AL measurement allows earlier and more accurate monitoring than prescriptions alone.

Why AL Measurement Matters

  • Detects progression earlier
  • Tracks treatment effectiveness
  • Guides personalized care
  • Reduces long-term eye health risks

“Axial length measurement is considered the gold standard for monitoring myopia progression.”
